DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's men's tennis team opened the 2012 season with a 6-3 victory over Cabrini College on Thursday afternoon at the DuPont Tennis Courts. The match was also the collegiate head coaching debut for Gail Hill.
The Wolverines nearly swept the doubles portion of the match, earning victories in both the second and third flights while getting edged out in the top position. Chris Maximo and Andrew Crews defeated Ian Monson and Justin Lutteroty, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles while Cochise Lucas and Nick Barr beat John Giovanelli and Nathan Martin, 8-3 in the third spot. Kevin Mangini and Patrick Aruta nearly rallied for a victory in the top position but fell, 8-6.
Maximo and Barr also earned points for Wesley at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Maximo beat Anthony DiCicco, 7-5, 7-5 while Barr allowed Walter Jesuncosky to win just two points in a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing.
After falling in the first set, Aruta came back to defeat Lutteroty, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth position while Mangini won at No. 6 singles in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Next week, Wesley will host Eastern University on March 22 for a 3 pm start.
