COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Freshmen Corey Jones and Lamar Monroe both won events in the Wesley College men's track & field season opener at the Ursinus Bow-Tie Classic on Saturday afternoon. Competing against several Division I and II teams, the Wolverines finished 8th of 15 squads in the collegiate track coaching debut for Stephen Kimes.
Monroe was victorious in the triple jump with a 44' 9.75" inch performance, which also broke a five-year-old school record held by Dakevis Howard. His performance also qualified him for the ECAC Championships later this season. Monroe also took third in the high jump with a 5' 7.75" effort.
After finishing fifth in the preliminary heat, Jones took the 60m dash in an impressive 7.04, which also qualified him for the ECAC Championships. He also ran the opening leg of the all-freshman 4x200m Relay which finished sixth in 1:37.08, along with Tahir Carr, Carl Watson and Alex Costley.
Watson, Costley and Carr also were a part of the 4x400m Relay team which finished eighth in 3:44.64. Joining them was fellow freshman Will Scott.
Also setting a school-record for Wesley was freshman Mike Ford, who tossed the shot put 44' 11" to finish sixth overall.
Costley also won his heat of the 400m Dash in 55.30.
The Wolverines will have a month off before their next meet on January 11 at the Kutztown Collegiate Invitational.
