Wesley sweeps doubleheader at Swathmore

SWATHMORE, Pa. – The Wesley College softball team take care of business in a doubleheader on the road, sweeping the Swathmore Garnet on Sunday.

Powered by a four-run fifth inning, the Wolverines downed the Garnet 6-3 in the first game.

After falling behind 3-0 after three innings, the Wolverines scored their first run of the game in the fourth when Lauren Hoffman cashed in on the one-out triple by Ashley Royer with an RBI single to right field.

In the fifth, Karina Cardona led off the inning with a single and then came around to score two batters later on an error by the shortstop. Later in the inning, Nina Marcano hit a two-run single to left field to score Megan DiRubbio and Lindsay Siok. Devan Mackay brought Marcano home with two outs on a double to left field.

Royer gave the Wolverines insurance in the top of the seventh when she singled up to middle to bring Samantha Burns home from third.

Marcano and Royer both went 2-for-4 in the first game.

Siok struck out five batters to earn the complete game victory.

In game two, The Wolverines downed the Garnet 14-5 in five innings to take the doubleheader.

The Wolverines scored in every inning except the fourth to earn the win. The Wolverines scored first in the top of the first when Mackay doubled to center field to score Marcano from second. The Garnet answered with a run in the bottom half of the first.

The Wolverines broke the tie in the second inning, scoring four two-out runs. Casey Beall came home from second on a RBI single by DiRubbio. Following a Burns single, DiRubbio scored on a Marcano single to center field. After Marcano stolen second to set up two runners in scoring position, Royer smacked a double to right center that allowed Burns and Marcano to score. The Garnet responded in the bottom of the second with three runs in the inning.

Two runs came across in the top of the third inning. Cardona scored from second base for the first run of the inning on Siok's RBI single to right field. Brooke Retkowski followed Siok's RBI with a sacrifice bunt that scored Casey Beall from third base.

The Wolverines batted around in the fifth inning to pile on seven runs of insurance. A pair of two RBI hits was the highlight of the inning. Hoffman came off the bench to deliver a two-run double to left center while Royer hit a triple to right field that plated two runs.

Siok came in relief to also pick up the win in the back half of the doubleheader. Siok struck out four in three and third innings of work.

The Wolverines (4-0) will take their spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. next week for eight games at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Wolverines will open with two games on Monday, March 6 when they take on the Medaille Mavericks and the Ursinus Bears.
