Wesley opens spring trip with pair of shutouts

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wesley College softball team picked up two shutout wins on Monday to start their spring break trip at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Wesley opened the day with a 1-0 win over the Medaille Mavericks.

Ashley Royer pushed across the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when she drove home Samantha Burns on a RBI double to center field.

Royer went 2-for-3 while Burns, Casey Beall and Megan DiRubbio each notched a hit.

Lilly Engel pitched a complete-game shutout for the Wolverines.

Lindsay Siok continued the Engel's great pitching performance with her own shutout win in Wesley's 2-0 victory over the Ursinus Bears.

Siok struck out six Bears and didn't allow a walk to earn her fourth victory of the season. Siok also registered two hits at the dish.

Wesley put a run on the board in the top of second inning. Following a leadoff single by Siok, DiRubbio pinch ran for Siok at first. Karina Cardona came through with a RBI triple to left field to plate DiRubbio.

Wesley also tallied a run in the top of the fifth. Brooke Retkowski drew a two-out, base loaded walk to allow Royer to score from third base.

Royer notched three hits, including a double, in four at bats in game two while Cardona recorded two hits in the win.

The Wolverines (6-0) will be back in action Tuesday when they face the King's (Pa.) Monarchs and the Cedar Crest Falcons in a doubleheader. First pitch from Myrtle Beach is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
