DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday to the Widener Pride at DuPont Field.
Widener pulled out a back-and-forth 11-7 win over Wesley in the first game.
Wesley and Widener each scored a run in the first two innings. Widener then tallied three runs in the third to take the 5-2 lead. Wesley responded by cutting the Widener lead to 5-4. Ashley Royer scored on a fielding error by the second baseman then Nina Marcano came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
Widener and Wesley traded runs in the fifth before Widener played four runs in the top of the sixth. Widener stifled the Wesley rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the opener.
Royer and Lauren Hoffman went 2-for-4 in the game. Hoffman had three RBIs in the game, including a two-run homer in the seventh inning while Royer scored twice. Megan DiRubbio tallied a hit and an RBI for the Wolverines.
Wesley had a hot start in the second game against Widener but a seven-run fourth inning by the Pride downed the Wolverines as they fell 9-5.
After Widener took the early lead in the first, Wesley batted around in the bottom half of the first and scored five runs.
DiRubbio started off the Wesley scoring in the first when she scored on an error on a sacrifice fly to left. Samantha Burns tagged up the score a batter later on a sacrifice fly to center field. A batter later, Devin Mackay came through with a single down the left field link to plate Allison Mills from second base. Following a double by Hoffman and a Karina Cardona single, Brooke Retkowski hit a two-run single through the left side to clear the bases.
Widener then pushed seven runs across in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the seventh to take the doubleheader sweep.
Mackay had a multi-hit game in the nightcap to pace the Wesley offense.
The Wolverines (10-6) will begin conference play on Saturday when they host the No. 10 Christopher Newport Captains in a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
