Siok tallies two wins in doubleheader sweep over Southern Virginia

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team swept the Southern Virginia Knights in a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader on Thursday at DuPont Field

Lindsay Siok picked up two wins in the doubleheader to earn her CAC-leading 10th win of the season.

Siok registered her third shutout of the season in Wesley's 5-0 win over Southern Virginia in game one. Siok faced two batters over the minimum, struck out six and retired the first 11 batters she faced in the game to record her sixth complete game of the year.

Ashley Royer batted in the first run of the game in the first inning on a single up the middle that scored Nina Marcano.

Wesley got a run in the third inning off a RBI single to center field by Siok that plated Marcano from second.

Wesley notched three more runs in the fourth. Samantha Burns knocked a RBI single through the left side to bring Brooke Retkowski home from second base. Devin Mackay had an RBI groundout to allow Megan DiRubbio to cross home plate and then Royer plated Marcano again with a single down the left field line.

Wesley recorded nine hits in the first game, all of them were singles. DiRubbio went 3-for-3 from the ninth spot while Royer went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Marcano scored three times for the Wolverines.

Wesley stifled a late comeback attempt by Southern Virginia with a 9-8 win the nightcap of the doubleheader to clinch the doubleheader sweep.

After a leadoff walk by Burns, Marcano cranked a two-run home run to center field to give Wesley the 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Wesley made it 3-0 in the second when Retkowski beat the throw home with runners at the corners.

Southern Virginia got a run in the third but Wesley responded with a run in the third and two runs in the fourth. Lauren Hoffman scored in the third off a DiRubbio single to left center field. In the fourth, Royer knocked a double to right field at score Mackay from first base. Two batter slater, Siok brought Allison Mills around to score on a single to right.

A MyKayla Johnson home run cut the Wesley lead to 6-3 in the fifth. Wesley extended the lead to 9-3 with three insurance runs in the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, DiRubbio hit an infield single to shortstop to score Royer. Burns followed with a walk that brought Hoffman to score. Then, Marcano hit a single through the right side of the infield to plate Alyssa Zimmerman.

Southern Virginia made it a one-run game with a five-run seventh inning but Siok got Alyssa Gastelum to strikeout swinging with a the tying run at second base to end the game.

Marcano, Royer, Hoffman and DiRubbio each had three hits in game two while Marcano notched three runs batted in. Siok went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and only gave up three hits, a walk and an unearned run for Wesley.

The Wolverines (14-8, 2-2 CAC) will be back in action on Saturday when they host the Frostburg State Bobcats in a CAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Wolverines will honor their five graduating seniors.
