Hoffman drives in five runs in doubleheader sweep of Lions

DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep on Monday over the Penn State Brandywine Lions.

The Wolverines earned the 3-1 win over the Lions in the first game of the doubleheader.

After Megan DiRubbio led off the game for the Wolverines with a double down the left field line, Lauren Hoffman plated DiRubbio with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.

The Lions tied the game in the third inning but the Wolverines pulled ahead in the sixth inning when Hoffman drove home two runs with a single to left field that scored DiRubbio and Samantha Burns.

Lindsay Siok earned the win in the first game with a complete-game effort. Siok struck out three while only allowing a walk and a run scored.

Karina Cardona went 3-for-4 for the Wolverines while DiRubbio, Burns and Brooke Retkowski tallied two hits. DiRubbio also scored twice in the win.

The Wolverines held off a late Lion rally to seal the 5-4 win to clinch the doubleheader sweep.

The Lions scored first with three runs in the third inning. The Wolverines answered back in a big way with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out in the inning and the bases loaded, Nina Marcano hit a single to center field that plated Siok and Lily Engel. Hoffman followed with a booming triple to right field that allowed Burns and Alyssa Zimmerman to cross the plate. Hoffman then scored on a passed ball.

The Lions cut the lead to a run in the sixth and got the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh. Siok sat down the Lion batter looking to preserve the sweep.

Retkowski and Hoffman each recorded two hits in the second game. Siok went 4.2 innings of relief to earn her second win of the day and her 12th win of the season.

The Wolverines (16-10) will head down to the Salisbury to take on the Seagulls in a conference doubleheader. The action is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
