MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Wesley College softball team cruised to a 9-1 run-rule victory in five innings over the Franciscan Barons on Thursday in their fourth day of play at the Fast Pitch Spring Dreams Classic in Myrtle Beach.
Wesley scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Brandi Dalious doubled down the left field line past a diving third baseman to score Megan DiRubbio from second base. Franciscan evened the score at one in the top of the second inning when Kayla Anderson scored on an RBI single from Haylee Weiss.
Then, the Wesley bats came to life in the third inning. Ashley Royer knocked a double to center field that scored Bianca Newsom. Dalious followed with a double of her down to the left-center field gap that plated Royer from first base. Two batters later, MyKayla Bird smacked a two-run double to right-center field to stretch the Wesley lead to 5-1.
Wesley added a run in the fifth when Royer hit a two-out single to left field that brought DiRubbio around to score from third base.
Wesley put the run-rule in effect with a three-run fifth inning. Newsom hit an infield single and Franciscan threw the ball away to allow Amanda Curry and DiRubbio to score. Royer followed with a walk-off triple to right-center field that scored Newsom to seal the victory.
Ashley Royer was a home run away from hitting for the cycle as she collected three hits and drove in three runs. Brandi Dalious and Megan DiRubbio also notched three hits in the win. Dalious and MyKayla Bird each tallied two RBIs while DiRubbio scored three times.
On the mound, Loukopoulos struck out seven batters and only allowed five hits, two walks and run in a complete-game effort to earn her seventh victory of the season.
