FROSTBURG, Md. – The Wesley College softball team split a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) doubleheader on the road against the Frostburg St. Bobcats on Friday.
Wesley got the better of a pitcher's duel in game one, pulling out a narrow 2-1 win over Frostburg.
Wesley added a run in the fourth when Brandi Dalious doubled to score Loukopoulos from first base to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Wolverines.
Frostburg got a run back in the sixth inning, but Wesley was able to keep the tying run at first base in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the win.
Dalious and Miranda Kinney each registered a double in the doubleheader opener. Abbey Mayse tallied her third win of the season with a complete-game effort. Mayse scattered five hits and only allowed a run while not giving up a walk.
Wesley were victims of a walk-off homer in the nightcap as the Wolverines dropped the 8-7 decision to the Bobcats for the doubleheader split.
Wesley and Frostburg traded runs in the opening two frames. Dalious put Wesley on the board in the first inning with a double to score Bianca Newsom. Frostburg tied the game at one in the second inning with a Sam Gatton RBI single.
Wesley went up 4-1 with a three-run third inning. Loukopoulos and Kinney came around to cross home plate when the Frostburg left fielder misjudged a ball in the outfield. Later in the third, Ashley Royer knocked an RBI single to plate Karina Cardona.
After Frostburg cut the lead to one run, Wesley tallied three runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-3 lead. Amanda Curry scored on an error by the first baseman. Later that inning, Dalious hit a two-run double to bring around Newsom and DiRubbio to score.
A three-run home run by Katelyn Mehrling in the bottom of the sixth and a two-run walk-off homer by Brittney Platt in the bottom of the seventh would prove to be the downfall for the Wolverines.
Dalious would drive in three runs with a pair of doubles in the second game. Loukopoulos, Cardona and Royer each tallied two hits in the loss.
The Wolverines (11-12-2, 1-6-1 CAC) will continue their road swing on Saturday when they take on the Southern Virginia Knights in a CAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
