MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – The Wesley College softball team swept the Penn St. -Harrisburg Lions in a non-conference doubleheader on the road on Thursday.
Game 1 – Wesley 5, Penn St.-Harrisburg 1
After Penn St. Harrisburg cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first, Cardona smacked her first home run of the season with a solo shot to left field in the third inning to put Wesley back up by two.
Wesley added two runs of insurance in the fourth inning when Brooke Retkowski scored on an RBI single by Megan DiRubbio. A double steal with runners on the corner would plate Gabriella Monzo from third base to put Wesley up 5-1.
A complete-game effort from Jessica Anderson would stall the Lions offense and allow Wesley to take the opener. Anderson would scatter six hits and two walks in seven innings. She struck out seven batters and only gave up one earned run.
Game 2 – Wesley 10, Penn St.-Harrisburg 0
The bats stayed hot in the nightcap as Wesley notched 16 hits and scored 10 runs for their second shutout of the season.
Karina Cardona went 4-for-5 in the second game with three doubles, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Brooke Retkowski went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Kelly Palmer, Ashley Royer and Dori Loukopoulos all hit two hits in the victory. Loukopoulos drove in three runs while Royer had a triple and drove in a run.
After giving up a hit to lead off the first inning, Abbey Mayse shut down the Lions bats and pitched a complete game. She faced three over the minimum with a strikeout.
Wesley (5-7) will take on the Rosemont Ravens at home on Saturday, March 16 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
