DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball team opened Atlantic East Conference play with a doubleheader split of the Marywood Pacers in a beautiful Saturday afternoon at DuPont Field.
Game 1 – Marywood 4, Wesley 2
Wesley couldn't get the offense going in game one as they fell 4-2 to Marywood in the opener.
Wesley fell behind 1-0 in the early goings of the game before tying the ballgame at one in the bottom of the fifth inning when Brooke Retkowski roped a triple to center with one out then scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
Marywood would retake the lead with an RBI single by Katie O'Meara in the sixth inning and add two runs of insurance in the seventh inning behind Wesley miscues in the field to take a 4-1 lead heading to the final at-bats of the game.
Looking to mount a comeback, Wesley opened the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff blast over the left field fence by Ashley Royer. But, one run was all that Wesley could muster as Marywood took the win.
Jessica Anderson struck out seven but allowed four runs (three earned), 10 hits and a walk.
Game 2 – Wesley 12, Marywood 1 (5 inn.)
The Wesley offense exploded for 12 runs on 13 hits while Dori Loukopoulos pitched a one-hitter in a run-rule win over Marywood.
Wesley plated six runs in the first inning, three of which came on a Gabriella Monzo bases-clearing double down the left field line.
Wesley added five more runs in the second. After Kelly Palmer led the inning off with an infield single, Royer drove her in an RBI double to left center field. Brandi Dalious followed with a triple to left center to plate Royer from second. Karina Cardona would knock in Dalious with an RBI single to center. Monzo would bring in Cardona with a two-out single then Alexis Howerin came to score on the same play on a throwing error by the right fielder.
Marywood tallied a run in the fourth inning but Wesley would get the run back in the bottom half of the fourth when Monzo came through with a two-out RBI single to score Cardona to push Wesley lead to 12-1. Loukopoulos sat down the Marywood side in the fifth on strikes to close out the game.
Loukopoulos only allowed one hit and a run in her complete game. She struck out seven and scattered five walks and a hit batter to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Monzo recorded a season-high five RBIs on a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate with a double. Cardona also notched a 3-for-3 game in the nightcap with a double and a pair of RBIs.
Brandi Dalious and Ashley Royer each went 2-for-3 in the middle of the lineup. Dalious registered her first triple in a Wesley uniform while Royer tied the career doubles record with 39 on her two-base hit in the second inning.
Wesley (12-12, 1-1 Atlantic East) hits the road for the first time in three weeks when they head to Maryland on Wednesday, April 3 to take on the Stevenson Mustangs in a non-league doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m.
