Softball falls in doubleheader against Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Wesley College softball battled with the Stevenson Mustangs but dropped a doubleheader on the road to the Mustangs.

Game 1 – Stevenson 2, Wesley 1 (8 inn.)

A pitching duel between Wesley's Dori Loukopoulos and Stevenson's Morgan Fulton unfortunately went against Wesley as Stevenson picked up the 2-1 win in eight innings in the doubleheader opener.

Wesley scored first in the game in the top of the fourth inning when Karina Cardona smacked a solo dinger over the right center field fence.

Stevenson tied the game with two outs in the sixth inning when Fulton hit an RBI single to scored Erin Stephey from first base.

Stevenson walked off in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Haley Lennon.

Loukopoulos struck out three and scattered five hits, two runs (one earned) and a walk in a complete game.

Cardona, Ashley Royer and Brooke Retkowski each tallied a hit in the loss.

Game 2 – Stevenson 8, Wesley 5

Both offenses fared better in the second game of the doubleheader, but Stevenson was able to secure the doubleheader sweep over Wesley with an 8-5 win.

Ashley Royer gave Wesley the first lead of the game on a two-run shot in the first inning. Stevenson responded with a run in the second and three runs in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Wesley cut the lead in half in the fourth inning when Brooke Retkowski scored from third on an RBI groundout by Miranda Kinney.

Karina Cardona tied the game at four in the fifth inning when she hit her second home runs of the day with a blast over the left center field fence.

Stevenson regained the lead with a run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh. Wesley got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when Royer scored from second base when Gabriella Monzo reached on a fielding error by the Stevenson shortstop. One run was all that Wesley could muster in the inning and Stevenson would take the win.

Royer paced the offense with a 3-for-4 game with the two-run homer and two runs scored. Cardona also scored twice along with her solo homer while Retkowski, Loukopoulos and Brandi Dalious each notched a hit for Wesley.

Up Next

Wesley (12-14) will resume Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Radnor, Pa. to take on the Cabrini Cavaliers. The doubleheader is set to start at 12 p.m.
