Royer makes history as softball routs Eastern

DOVER. Del. - The Wesley College softball team snapped their four-game losing streak by cruising to a doubleheader sweep over the Eastern Eagles at home on Thursday.

Game 1 – Wesley 13, Eastern 0 (5 inn.)

Wesley used the long ball and scored in every inning to power through the Eastern Eagles in the doubleheader opener.

Wesley pounded out 16 hits, 11 of which were extra-base hits. The 1-6 hitters in the lineup each notched two hits and drove in at least one run.

Ashley Royer, Brandi Dalious and Dori Loukopoulos all belted solo homers in the game. Royer also hit a double in the fourth inning of the game to become Wesley's all-time leader in doubles with 40 in her career, passing Jessica Morgan '08. Royer and Dalious each scored twice while Dalious brought home two runs.

Karina Cardona went 2-for-3 at the top of the lineup with three runs batted in on a pair of doubles.  Amanda Curry and Miranda Kinney each went 2-for-2 with an RBI double. Curry scored three times while Kinney touched home twice. Alexis Howerin tallied two runs scored and a double in the win.

Jessica Anderson pitched a two-hit shutout to collect her sixth win of the season. She struck out five batters, scattered three walk and a hit batter for her eighth complete game and second shutout of 2019.

Game 2 – Wesley 14, Eastern 5 (5 inn.)

The bats stayed hot in the nightcap of the doubleheader as Wesley run-ruled Eastern to pick up the sweep. Wesley put the pedal on the ground early by batting around and scoring eight runs in the first inning. After Eastern put three runs on the board in the second inning, Wesley got those three runs back in the bottom half of the inning.

Karina Cardona and Brandi Dalious each recorded three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored to pace the offense. Brooke Retkowski and Megan DiRubbio registered two hits. Retkowski drove in two runs on a two-run single in the fourth inning while DiRubbio scored twice.

Gabreilla Monzo and Ashley Royer notched two runs scored. Royer added two RBIs on a two-run single of her own in the first inning.

Wesley (14-16) will resume Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday when they host the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the games, Wesley will honor their graduating seniors, Ashley Royer and Megan DiRubbio for Senior Day.
