DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College softball split an Atlantic East Conference twin bill with the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins on Tuesday.
Game 1 - Gwynedd Mercy 1, Wesley 0
An unearned run in the seventh inning proved to be the downfall of Wesley, as they fell 1-0 in the opener.
After six scoreless innings, Brianna Polly reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base on the error. A batter later, Rebecca Christoffers doubled Polly home from second to score the first run of the game.
Wesley looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning when Amanda Curry opened the inning with a leadoff single and was moved over to second base on a Brooke Retkowski sacrifice bunt. Curry was caught off second base when Miranda Kinney reached on an infield hit to shortstop and Curry was stuck in a rundown. After Bianca Newsom reached on a single to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Alexis Gartner induced a Karina Cardona groundout to stymie the Wesley rally,
Jessica Anderson was saddled with the loss after not giving up an earned run. She struck out three and scattered five walks and four hits.
Game 2 – Wesley 12, Gwynedd Mercy 4 (5 inn.)
As game one was a pitcher's duel, runs were aplenty in game two as Wesley picked up the run-rule victory to split the doubleheader.
Gwynedd Mercy scored three runs in the top of the first, Wesley would cut the Gwynedd lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the first when Newsom came around to score when Megan DiRubbio laid down a perfect bunt to third base and Gwynedd threw the ball away trying to get Newsom out at third base.
Even though Gwynedd Mercy got the run back in the third, seven runs came to score in the bottom of the third, three of which came on wild pitches, to allow Wesley to power ahead of Gwynedd, 8-4. Dori Loukopoulos, Miranda Kinney and Gabriella Monzo all tallied RBIs in the inning.
A pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings would trigger the run-rule and seal the win for Wesley. After a leadoff triple to lead off the bottom of the fourth, Loukopoulos brought her home with a double to left center field. Kinney plated Loukopoulos with an RBI groundout. Bases-loaded walks by Royer and Loukopoulos ended the game in the fifth inning.
Dori Loukopoulos struck out five and only gave up six hits and four runs (two earned) to notch her sixth win of the season. At the plate, Loukopoulos drove in three runs and scored a run.
Wesley (15-17, 2-4 Atlantic East) will play their final home games of the regular season on Thursday when they host the Immaculata Mighty Macs in an Atlantic East doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 3 p.m.
