Solid pitching carries softball to doubleheader split with Immaculata

DOVER, Del. - Strong pitching from Jessica Anderson and Dori Loukopoulos allowed the Wesley College softball team to pick up a doubleheader split with Atlantic East Conference foe, Immaculata, on Thursday.

Game 1 – Immaculata 2, Wesley 1

Wesley outhit Immaculata 10-3 but left 10 runners on base in a close 2-1 pitcher's duel in the opener.

Wesley got on the board in the first inning when Brandi Dalious knocked an RBI single to left field to score Karina Cardona for the opening run of the game.

Immaculata tied the game at one in the top of the second when Jess Borman scored on a throwing error by the Wesley shortstop.

Both teams were held scoreless in the middle innings until Immaculata's Keani Hindle put the Mighty Macs ahead in the top the sixth with a leadoff homer over the left field fence.

Wesley was looking to send the game into extras or walk-off winners in the bottom of the seventh when Megan DiRubbio and Ashley Royer led the inning off with back-to-back singles. After Dalious grounded out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, Immaculata got Amanda Curry to ground into a double play with DiRubbio thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Dalious, DiRubbio, Miranda Kinney and Gabriella Monzo each went 2-for-3 in the game. One of Kinney's two hits was a double in the second inning.

Jessica Anderson was the hard-luck loser in the doubleheader opener. Anderson pitched a complete game three-hitter with six strikeouts, three hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks. During the game, Anderson surpassed Stefany Tiberi's single-season strikeout mark of 90.

Game 2 – Wesley 4, Immaculata 1

After Immaculata scored first in the top of the first on a Keani Hindle double that scored Ashley Rey, Wesley countered with a Miranda Kinney RBI double in the bottom of the first to plate Brandi Dalious from second base.

Wesley tacked on a pair of runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead when Dalious blasted a two-run shot over the center field fence. In the fourth inning, Amanda Curry was able to knock a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded to allow Dori Loukopoulos to scamper home from third base to add a run of insurance and give Wesley the 4-1 lead.

The three-run cushion was all Loukopoulos needed to earn her seventh win of the season. Loukopoulos also registered a complete game three-hitter with four strikeouts, five scattered walks and a run.

Ashley Royer notched two doubles in three at-bats. Brandi Dalious scored twice, homered and knocked a double in the win.
