Dover, Del. – Wesley's Softball team dropped game one of a double-header with Stevenson University on Wednesday 6-4. The Mustangs picked up three runs in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth, handing Wesley their third loss of the season. The Wolverines stand at a still impressive 11-4 record.
Karina Cardona knocked in Brooke Retkowski on a two out double in the bottom of the second, scoring the first run of the game. Stevenson put up a run of their own in the next half inning, and then proceeded to rally four runs across the plate during the fourth, two of which were unearned due to a costly Wesley error with one out. The Mustangs led 4-1 heading into the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth, Bianca Newsom's RBI single would allow Cardona to score. The Wolverines took advantage of a Stevenson error in which Carly Setting sprinted home to bring Wesley back into the game 4-3.
After the Mustangs plated another two runs in the sixth, Wesley attempted to get a rally started in the bottom of the seventh off of Brandi Dalious' two out RBI single. Unfortunately, the Wolverines grounded into their final out of the game down 6-4.
Wesley's starting pitcher Dori Loukopoulos drops to 6-2 on the season as she gave up four runs in 3.1 innings pitched off of seven hits. She also fanned three Mustangs during her outing. Reliever Abbey Mayse pitched the final 3.2 innings and surrendered just two runs on four hits while K'ing a Stevenson batter.
Dover, Del. – The Softball team added a win in game two of their double-header with Stevenson 7-3. Wesley held the Mustangs to a three run fifth inning as they tacked on runs through the third, fourth, and fifth. Jessica Anderson pitched the full six innings securing her fifth win of the season.
Carly Setting scored the first run of the game off of Bianca Newsom's RBI double in the bottom of the third inning. Wesley would continue their offensive successes the very next inning with an RBI double coming off the bat of Karina Cardona, scoring Gabriella Monzo from second base. Brooke McCormick sent Monzo home with a sacrifice fly-out to right, making the score 3-0.
The Wolverines' two errors in the top of the fifth would cost them three runs during the inning. Brandi Dalious would take care of that problem by launching a three-run blast over the right center field wall with one out. McCormick later reached on a Mustangs error, allowing Brooke Retkowski to score to make the final score 7-3
Aside from a shaky fifth inning, staring pitcher Anderson dazzled on the mound. She allowed just three runs on seven hits over the course of her complete game. Anderson also racked up three strikeouts on the day.
Wesley improves to 12-4 as they head to Salisbury on Friday for another double-header. Game one's start time will come at 2 p.m., as game two will begin immediately after at 4 p.m.
