Owens and Boyd Earn All-CAC Honors
Complete 2008-09 All-CAC Women's Basketball Team
YORK, Pa. - Wesley College's Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) was named to the All-Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) first team, while teammate Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) was named to the second team in voting by the conference coaches.
The two student-athletes, both sophomores, turned in record-setting performances for the Wolverines this season. Owens established new single season rebounding record with Wesley with 299 so far, while Boyd's 177 assists this season also set a new high water mark for the program.
Owens leads the CAC with an average of 11.1 rebounds per game, a .583 field goal percentage and 7.4 defensive rebounds per game. She also ranked in the top 10 in the conference in blocks (second, 2.3 per game) and scoring (seventh, 13.9 points per game) and each mark was a team-high. Her 59 blocks on the season are the second most in a season at Wesley.
Boyd, meanwhile, ranks second in the CAC and fifth in NCAA Division III with 6.6 assists per game. Boyd ranked among the conference leaders in minutes played (second, 35.8 per game), assist/turnover ratio (third, 1.6), steals (fourth, 2.0 per game) and free throw percentage (seventh, .728). She already ranks second all-time at Wesley with 323 career assists.
Only one school, York (Pa.) had more all-conference selections than the Wolverines with three, while Marymount (Va.) and Mary Washington joined Wesley with two apiece.
The Spartans' Keli Ward won the CAC Player of the Year Award, while her head coach Betsy Witman was named Coach of the Year. Katie Wimmer of Mary Washington earned CAC Rookie of the Year honors.
Wesley, currently 15-12 overall after finishing 10-6 in the CAC, earned a bid to the ECAC South Championship Tournament and will travel to Gwynned-Mercy on March 4 for a quarterfinal match up at 7:00 PM.
