Boyd, Owens Lead Wesley at Catholic
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) scored 26 points and classmate Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) had 16 points and 19 rebounds as Wesley won its season opener, 70-56 at Catholic.
The first half was the Briana Peterson show for the Cardinals (0-1) as the Cardinals' Preseason All-American scored 19 points in the opening stanza to lift Catholic to a 30-23 lead at the break.
The second half, however, belonged to Boyd, Owens and Wesley (1-0). Boyd scored 17 of her 26 in the second half and Owens had a double-double in that half alone, grabbing 12 boards to go along with 10 points. The Wolverines, meanwhile, found an answer for Peterson, limiting her to just six more points on 3-of-9 shooting in the second half. As a team, Wesley hit 7-of-12 threes in the half to finish the game at 40 percent.
The Wolverines still trailed until a three by Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) gave Wesley a 34-33 advantage with 14:40 to go. It was the start of a 14-2 run fueled by another three by Mules, one each by Shavonda Cephas (Milford, Del./Milford) and Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) and a lay up by Boyd to give Wesley a 45-35 lead midway through the final half.
Wesley stretched the lead to as many as 17 after a lay up by Owens with a minute left.
In addition to 26 points, Boyd led the Wolverines with six assists and added five rebounds and three steals.
Owens, meanwhile, led Wesley to a 51-40 advantage on the glass and even chipped in from long range, hitting 2-of-3 three point attempts.
Mules added 10 points for the Wolverines.
Peterson finished the game with 25 points and seven rebounds and was the only Catholic player in double figures.
The Wolverines are back in action on November 21-22 when they travel to the Starter's Pub Tip Off Classic at DeSales University.
