Wesley Notches Sixth Straight Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - Wesley College's Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) and Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) combined for 45 points as the Wolverines downed St. Mary's (Md.) for the team's sixth straight win.

Owens picked up her ninth double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds.  The senior forward, who leads the Capital Athletic Conference in scoring, hit 9-of-14 field goals, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked three shots in the game.

Miller added 19 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals.  Over the past four games, the sophomore is averaging nearly four steals per contest.

Miller scored six points in an 11-4 run to close the first half that put the Wesley (13-10, 8-6 CAC) in the locker room with a nine point lead, 29-20.

The Seahawks (11-12, 7-8 CAC), however, cut that lead to 37-35 after a bucket by Jamie Roberts with 11:21 left in the game.  Owens and Miller quickly stretched the Wolverines' lead to 13, 52-39, five minutes later by scoring all of Wesley's points in a 15-4 run.

While the run appeared to put the game out of reach, St. Mary's had other ideas.  The Seahawks responded with a 15-2 run over the next two minutes and tied the game at 54-54 on a three by Roberts with 3:04 to play.

Free throws by Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) and Owens got the lead back for Wesley and the Seahawks could not answer, falling behind 62-56 before a buzzer beating three by Roberts.

Roberts did her best to keep the Seahawks in the game, scoring 23 points in the loss.  Shana Lewis netted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The win gave Wesley a 1.5 game lead on the Seahawks in the CAC standings and one game behind a logjam of teams tied for second place.  York (Pa.), Frostburg State and Marymount (Va.) all sit with identical 9-5 records.

The Wolverines face a key match up with York (Pa.) on February 16 at 6:00 PM.
