DOVER, DEL. – Three Wolverines recorded double-doubles to help lead the Wesley College women's basketball team to its first win of the season beating Southern Virginia, 52-40 Saturday afternoon at Wentworth Gymnasium. Wesley improves to 1-7 on the season while SVU falls to 2-6.
Tiara White kick-started the Wolverine offense, scoring the first eight points of the game to give Wesley the 8-0 lead with 16:57 to go in the first half. After a Karen Wearden jumper, Allie Martin scored the next two buckets before the Knights went on an offensive run themselves. Wesley took a 20-18 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Roniece Williams hit a trey before giving way to White for a layup to push the lead to 25-18. A pair of Brionna Johnson and White free throws gave Wesley the 30-24 advantage with twelve minutes left to play. The Wolverines outscored the Knights 22-16 the rest of the way, with White, Johnson, and Williams accounting for 18 of those points. Nicole Evanko banked a momentum changing three pointer while Miesha Reeves connected on a free throw during that stretch.
Wesley was led by White who recorded 19 points and 13 boards while Williams snagged 13 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson had 10 points and 11 boards while Haley Thomas had a team-best seven steals.
Morgan Hartvigsen led all Knight scorers with 13 points while Crystal Cleveland recorded a team-high nine boards.
Wesley returns to the pitch on Monday when they host Rowan at Wentworth Gymnasium. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
