DOVER, Del. – Brionna Johnson and Tiara White both recorded double-doubles and combined for 43 points to lead the Wesley College women's basketball team to a 71-57 victory over Rowan University on Monday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. With their second-straight win, the Wolverines improve to 2-7 while the Profs fall to 3-8.
A freshman from nearby Smyrna, Del., Johnson made 9-of-16 shots from the floor to tally 22 points to go with 14 rebounds and four assists. White, a sophomore newcomer from Philadelphia, added 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and ten rebounds.
Playing its best game all year, Wesley shot a season-high 46.9% from the floor and 23 of its 30 made field goals were assisted. The 23 assists were the most by a Wesley team since February 4, 2010 when the Wolverines recorded 27 assists in a win over Gwynedd-Mercy. Kiara Johnson dished out a season-high seven assists and Haley Thomas was also credited with five on the night. Roniece Williams, who chipped in with ten points and eight rebounds, Karen Wearden and Nicole Evanko also registered two assists each.
Early in the game, both teams were neck-and-neck trading the lead five times. Trailing, 13-12 with 8:24 left in the first half, Miesha Reeves drilled a shot from the top of the key to give the Wolverines back the lead.
Wesley would never give back the lead as it went on an 18-6 run over the next five minutes and 20 seconds. Following Reeves' jumper, Evanko and Williams each drilled a pair of triples to key the run which was capped off by a putback layup by White with 3:04 left in the period.
The Wolverines went into the half with a 32-21 lead and the Profs would get as close as six points at 50-44 with 9:01 left in regulation. With its advantage cut two a two possession game, Wesley scored 12 unanswered points to seal the victory.
Capital Athletic Conference play resumes for the Wolverines when they travel to face No. 21 Christopher Newport on Wednesday, January 8 at 5 pm.
