Turnovers Costly for Women's Hoops at #21 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Wesley College's Brionna Johnson led all players with 21 points and nine rebounds but it was not enough as the Wolverines women's basketball team fell, 71-52, at No. 21 Christopher Newport on Wednesday night at Freeman Center. The Wolverines now stand at 2-8 overall and 0-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Captains move to 10-2 on the year and 3-1 in league play.

A freshman from Smyrna, Del., Johnson made 8-of-12 shots and five of her nine boards came on the offensive end.  Haley Thomas and Roniece Williams both scored ten points as well and combined for ten assists while Williams also grabbed nine rebounds.

Turnovers were the story of the game for Wesley, who gave the ball back to Christopher Newport 35 times on the night.  The Wolverines actually outshot the Captains, 43.6% to 40.6%, but CNU scored 40 points off turnovers and tallied 21 second chance points.

Wesley hosts Mary Washington at 1 pm on Saturday, January 11 in a CAC matchup.
