DOVER, Del. -- The Wesley College women's basketball team fell to Mary Washington, 79-52 in an afternoon match-up at Wentworth Gym. With the win, Mary Washington advances to 9-4; 3-3 in conference while Wesley falls to 2-9; 0-5 in conference play.
The final score may not show it but the Wolverines fought hard and led for much of the first half. Roniece Williams downed the first basket of the game. A pair of free throws and a jump shot let Mary Washington take the lead but a lay-up by Tiara White tied the game and Brionna Johnson downed a pair of free throws to regain the lead. This lasted for just under 11 minutes in the half tas he Wolverines led by as many as nine points.
With four minutes left in the half, Claire Haeuptle of Mary Washington made a 3-point jump shot to tie the game. Sam Partonen downed three more 3-pointers, including a buzzer beater to end the half, giving the Eagles a 35-28 halftime lead.
Williams contributed 12 points to lead the team along with three rebounds and three steals. Brionna Johnson scored 11 points, nine of them coming from the free throw line while White was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points.
The Wolverines return to the court at 6:00 pm on Monday, January 13 when they play Trinity at home.
