DOVER, Del. – Tiara White and Brionna Johnson combined for 45 points and 31 rebounds to lead the Wesley College women's basketball team to a 68-46 victory over Trinity Washington University on Monday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. The Wolverines now stand at 3-9 overall while the Tigers fall to 5-3.
A sophomore from Philadelphia, Pa., White made 12-of-13 shots from the field and sunk three free throws for a career-high 27 points along with ten rebounds and three assists. Johnson, a fellow newcomer from Smyrna, Del., tallied 18 points and 21 rebounds with a career-high four three-pointers.
Wesley never trailed in the game and started to pull away from the feisty Tigers late in the first half. Leading by just a mere six points with 3:26 left, Allie Martin (five points, seven rebounds, four assists) started an 11-2 Wolverine run, extending Wesley's lead to 35-20 with 1:19 left in the half.
Trinity made three-straight free throws in the closing seconds of the period to cut Wesley's halftime lead to 35-23. White and Johnson both scored 11 points in the second half and Karen Wearden chipped in with five to seal the victory for the Wolverines who shot 44.6% from the field and assisted on 22 of their 29 made baskets.
Seven Wesley players had at least two assists on the night, led by Haley Thomas with five.
The Wolverines host Salisbury in a CAC matchup on Wednesday, January 15, at 6 pm.
