MIDDLETOWN, Pa. – Brionna Johnson came off the bench and scored a team-high 15 points along with eight rebounds to lead the Wesley College women's basketball team to a 43-40 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday night at the Capital Union Building. The Wolverines now stand at 4-11 overall while the Nittany Lions fall to 5-11 and both teams hold a 1-7 record in Capital Athletic Conference action.
A freshman from Smyrna, Del., Johnson hit a pivotal layup with an assists from fellow freshman Kiara Johnson to give Wesley a 43-38 lead with 1:39 left in regulation. After responding with a layup, Penn State had an opportunity to tie the score in the closing seconds but sophomore newcomer Tiara White blocked a shot attempt by Penn State's Rebecca Bailey to seal the victory.
The first half traded four leads and tied twice in the first half, but with the Wolverines trailing, 16-15 with 3:35 left, Brionna Johnson hit a free throw to tie the score and start a 13-0 Wesley run to close out the half.
Haley Thomas added eight points for the Navy & White while fellow starters Roniece Williams, White and Kiara Johnson combined for 13 points. Nicole Evanko hit a couple of threes off the bench as Wesley's bench outscored Penn State's, 22-0.
Kiara Carter and Kaitlyn Carmo scored 36 of the Nittany Lions' 40 points but the rest of Penn State's team shot just 1-of-26 from the field.
Wesley goes back on the road on Saturday, January 25 to play Southern Virginia in a 1 pm start. The Wolverines defeated the Knights, 52-40, on January 4 in Dover.
