DOVER, DEL. - Despite Brionna Johnson's double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds, Wesley College's women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale against St. Marys, 67-55, in Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday at Wentworth Gymnasium.
The Wolverines conclude their season at 5-20 overall and 2-14 in the CAC while the Seahawks improve to 10-14 overall and 6-10 in CAC.
Johnson kickstarted the Wesley offense by scoring the first 16 points for the Wolverines. At the 3:12 minute mark, Johnson hit a pair of free throws to give Wesley the 24-21 lead. After a pair of St. Mary's layups, Roniece Williams hit three free throws while Brittney Kerns made a layup to make it a 29-25 Wesley advantage heading into the break.
St. Mary's started the second half on an 18-6 run with Sophie Pruden scoring their first 11 points and Wesley could never regain the lead. Down the stretch, Haley Thomas scored on a driving layup and Nicole Evanko hit a three pointer to bring Wesley back within nine with 33 seconds remaining in the game. The Seahawks hit all four their free throws in the closing second in to seal the game.
Johnson led all scorers with 25 points, five steals, and 15 boards. Williams contributed 11 points while Tiara White added seven of her own.
St. Mary's was led by Pruden and Shana Lewis with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Karen Wearden and Haley Thomas capped off their senior seasons by being honored prior to today's game.
