DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's women's basketball team put forth a great effort but dropped a Capital Athletic Conference matchup against Christopher Newport University, 79-53, on Sunday afternoon at Wentworth Gymnasium. The Wolverines now stand at 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the CAC while the Captains improve to 7-2 on the year and 3-0 in league play.
Sophomore Brionna Johnson recorded her ninth-straight double-double to open the season with a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds while Alexus Stroud also finished in double figures with 11. Wesley also got eight points from Tiara White, a season-high seven points by Victoria Hayes and six points along with five assists by Kiara Johnson.
Christopher Newport scored the game's first seven points and extended its lead to as many as 25-4 with a free throw with 11 minutes left in the first half. Wesley then upped the defensive pressure and went on a 13-2 run to close to within ten with just under five minutes in the half, but the Captains regrouped to took a 41-21 lead into the half.
Johnson converted on a layup and Stroud buried a triple to open the second half to cut the deficit to 15 points but that would be as close as the Wolverines could get.
Three Captains finished with over ten points, including Camry Green with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sam Porter also had a double-double off the bench with 13 points and ten boards.
Wesley forced Christopher Newport to shoot just 42% from the field with 24 turnovers but a much taller Captains squad took advantage of 30 second-chance points.
The Wolverines travel to Arcadia on Tuesday, December 16 for a 6 pm tipoff.
