GLENSIDE, Pa. – Brionna Johnson collected another double-double to lead the Wesley College women's basketball team to a 71-64 victory at Arcadia on Tuesday night. The Wolverines now stand at 6-4 overall while the Knights fall to an identical 6-4.
A sophomore from Smyrna, Del., Johnson recorded a game-high 19 points along with 11 rebounds for her NCAA-leading 10th double-double of the season. Johnson was not alone in the scoring for Wesley, who also got double figures from Alexus Stroud (13 points), Roniece Williams (ten points) and Tiara White, who also notched a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds. Williams also pitched in with five points and six assists.
Wesley trailed by a narrow 11-8 margin just minutes into the game but Wesley went on to score seven-straight points and never looked back, extending its lead to as many as nine and taking a 39-33 lead into the break.
Arcadia did not go down without a fight, cutting the deficit to just three points in the final minute of the game but Wesley made four free throws down the stretch and held the Knights scoreless for the final 90 seconds.
The Knights actually outshot the Navy & White but Wesley used its aggressive offense to make 20 free throws compared to just nine for Arcadia. Wesley also recorded 18 second-chance points.
Wesley returns to the court on Saturday, January 3 when its hosts CAC rival Frostburg State at 1 pm.
