DOVER, Del. – A three by Janel Brown with 19 seconds left gave Penn State Harrisburg a three-point lead and Wesley could not respond as the Nittany Lions defeated the Wolverines, 65-61 on Wednesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium. Wesley falls to 7-6 on the year and 3-4 in the CAC while Penn State moves to 4-10 on the year with a 3-4 mark in league play.
Penn State Harrisburg went on a late 17-2 run that lasted nearly eight minutes, giv ing the Nittany Lions its first lead since early in the first half at 60-58 with 2:49 left to play. Both teams would then trade free throws before Wesley's Brionna Johnson tied it with 1:11 remaining on a layup.
However, Brown's triple from the corner gave the Nittany Lions back the lead and Penn State played great defense to force a tough game-tying attempt.
Johnson led all players with 17 points and 15 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season while also tying Roniece Willams (12 points, seven rebounds) for a team-high four assists.
Both teams struggled from the floor as Penn State shot 33.3% compared to just 31.9% for Wesley, who shot just 7-of-7 from the free throw line compared to 13-of-19 for the Lions.
Wesley returns home on Saturday, January 17 when they host CAC rival St. Mary's at 1 pm.
