NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Alexus Stroud scored a game-high 16 points but it was not enough as the Wesley College women's basketball team fell at Christopher Newport, 68-41, on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center. The Wolverines now stand at 10-11 overall and 6-8 in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Captains move to 13-8 on the year and 9-5 in the CAC.
Stroud received a rare start for Wesley but gave the Wolverines a brief, 3-2 lead with a triple with 17:43 left in the first half. Christopher Newport retook the lead when it answered with a three and the teams traded baskets before Roniece Williams gave Wesley back the lead at 10-9 with a trifecta of her own with 13:17 remaining.
That would be the last time the Wolverines would hold the lead as the Captains went on a 7-1 run but the trio of Stroud, Williams and Brionna Johnson kept Wesley in the game for the rest of the period.
Wesley, who shot just 27.8% from the field, went into the break down just four but CNU went on a 10-2 run to open the second half and never looked back.
Aside from Stroud, Williams and Johnson added 11 points each for Wesley but Tiara White was the only Wolverines to get on the board with three points.
The Wolverines host Salisbury University on Wednesday, February 11 at 6 pm.
