BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Wesley College women's basketball team got a strong performance from Brionna Johnson, but ultimately fell to Colby College 84-48 on Friday evening in the first round of the Cave Classic hosted by Bridgewater State University.
Johnson finished with 14 points and a game-high 20 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, for her first double-double of the season. The 20-rebound game was the first by Johnson since the 2013-14 season when she pulled in more than 20 rebounds twice. Monshea Newsome-Murray added 14 points for the Wolverines and pulled in nine rebounds.
Coming off of a conference win in their season opener, Wesley took a while to settle into their surroundings, falling into an 18-5 hole in the first quarter. The squad continued to struggle in the second and third quarters, but outscored the Mules 16-15 in the final frame. By then it was too late though as the team fell 84-48.
Colby shot 52% (35-67) from the floor, including 10-for-21 (48%) from behind the arc. The Mules also held the Wolverines to just 26% (19-for-74) shooting. Colby assisted on 26 of its 35 made field goals, while Wesley finished with no assists on 19 field goals. Wesley also shot 0-for-9 from behind the arc after shooting better than 40% (10-for-24, 41.7%) in their season opener.
The Wolverines will look to rebound quickly as they take on event hosts Bridgewater State University in the consolation game on Saturday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
