DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Women's Basketball team battled for a full 40 minutes against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Christopher Newport University, but could not overcome the Captains' depth and defensive intensity as the Wolverines fell 65-56 on Saturday at Wentworth Gymnasium.
Brionna Johnson led the Wolverines in points and rebounds, putting up a double-double with 16 and 14. Alexus Stroud added 15 points while Brittney Kerns dished out a team-high five assists. The Wolverines forced CNU into 22 turnovers, but committed 26 themselves as the Captains applied fullcourt pressure nearly every possession.
The Wolverines allowed CNU to jump out to a 17-8 lead, but Brionna Johnson slid past her defender to connect on a layup at the 3:55 mark to spark a 9-2 run to close out the first quarter and trail only 19-17 at the first quarter break.
Wesley opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to overtake the Captains. Baskets by Tiara White and Brittney Kerns sandwiched a pair of Tiyanna Gibbs free-throws as Wesley built a 23-19 advantage. CNU responded with a 13-0 run of their own to regain the lead but the Wolverines battled to stay in the game. Stroud scored the final four points of the frame to cut the deficit to 34-29 at the half.
In the third, the Captains' depth wore on the Wolverines. 13 different Captains saw the floor in Saturday's contest, with nine of them scoring at least a point. The fresh legs kept coming in droves for the visiting squad as Wesley fell behind, trailing 52-38 at the end of the third.
Wesley outscored CNU 18-13 in the final quarter and trimmed the Captains lead to six points on a Stroud jumper with 3:53 remaining. The Navy and White could draw no closer though as the Captains earned the victory.
The Wolverines moved to 5-16 with a 4-10 mark in conference play. The squad will travel to Salisbury on Wednesday evening to take on the Sea Gulls in another CAC rivalry matchup.
