Wolverines Clipped by Sea Gulls

DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Women's Basketball team fell short of a victory on Wednesday night, dropping a Capital Athletic Conference contest to nearby rival Salisbury University 76-64.

Alexus Stroud continued her torrid scoring streak to lead the team with 23 points while Tiyanna Gibbs added 12. Tiara White scored six and grabbed a team-high six rebounds, while Brionna Johnson was limited to a season-low four rebounds. Gibbs and Monshea Newsome-Murray each snatched three steals as Wesley forced 19 turnovers but committed 14 of their own.

The Wolverines lost the battle of the boards as the Sea Gulls outrebounded them 55-31 and notched 21 second-chance points.

Wesley battled with Salisbury in the first quarter, trading baskets for the majoirty of the frame. With 40 seconds remaining, Salisbury jumped out to a six-point lead, their largest of the quarter, but Stroud drilled a three on the Wolverines' final offensive possession to make it 18-15 after the first period.

In the second, a Gibbs three cut the Salisbury lead to 22-20 but the Sea Gulls responded with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. Salisbury led by as many as 14 points, but a Brittney Kerns layup made it a 10-point game at the halftime break.

In the second half, Wesley drew within nine but could come no closer to tying the contest. Midway through the third quarter a pair of Stroud free throws made the score 46-37, but the Sea Gulls put together a 22-9 run spanning over the next eight minutes to put the game out of reach. The Wolverines outscored Salisbury 18-8 over the final seven minutes but by then the game was out of reach.

Wesley moves to 5-17 on the year with a 4-11 mark in conference play. The team will travel to Frostburg State on Saturday to take on the Bobcats in another CAC contest.
