DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College Women's Basketball team was selected to finish eighth in the Capital Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll released on Thursday afternoon.
The Wolverines were picked ahead of conference rivals Frostburg State and Southern Virginia and just behind St. Mary's College. Mary Washington was selected to finish first in the conference with six first-place votes, while Christopher Newport received four first-place votes to finish second in the poll.
The Wolverines finished last season with a 7-18 record, including a 6-12 mark in conference play, narrowly missing the CAC Playoffs. Wesley returns four of their five top scorers as the Wolverines will attempt to get back to the CAC Tournament for the first time since the 2010-11 season. 2015 CAC Second Team All-Conference selection Brionna Johnson will lead the Navy and White into the season with high hopes. Tiyanna Gibbs, Alexus Stroud, and Monshea Newsome-Murrayalso return from last year's starting lineup and will be joined by six other returners as the Wolverines open their season on November 15 when they host Widener.
The 2015-16 season was a banner year for CAC women's basketball, as a conference-record tying three CAC teams earned bids to the NCAA tournament. Mary Washington posted a pair of road wins in the conference tournament to captures its sixth CAC title and first since 2011-12, while Marymount and Christopher Newport earned at-large berths into NCAA's following stellar campaigns of their own.
Wesley opens their season at home with a game against Widener on November 15. The squad opens its CAC slate on November 30 when they host Marymount University.
