DOVER, Del. - The long-anticipated moment has arrived for the Wesley College Women's Basketball team. The squad will open their season on Tuesday night at Wentworth Gymnasium when they take on Widener at 7:00 p.m.
The Wolverines return four of five starters, including 2015-16 All-Conference Selection Brionna Johnson. Johnson was the team's leading scorer and leading rebounder a season ago, averaging 12.9 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game. Alexus Stroud (12.0 ppg) and Tiyanna Gibbs (11.5 ppg) also return to help bolster a solid Wolverine offense. Monshea Newsome-Murray is back again to run the point in her sophomore season. As a freshman, Newsome-Murray led the team with 3.7 assists per game.
Seniors Kiara Johnson, Brittney Kerns, and Adriane Fraser are back to help carry the load for the Wolverines while Stacey O'Neale, Maura Binkley, and Josette Smith each return looking to expand their roles this season with another year of experience under their belts.
Joining the Wolverines this season are freshmen Paige Hailstock, a guard from Rockville, Md. and Chardae Booker-Hayes, a forward from Woodstown, N.J. The two young talents should add to the depth of the Wolverines and could make an immediate impact.
Widener enters their season off of a 13-12 season in 2015-16 and return three players from last year's starting lineup. Juniors Allison Gallagher and Julia Venturelli headline the list of returners. Gallagher is the team's top returning scorer and has averaged 13.8 points in her career. She also ranked first among returners in rebounds (4.8 pg) and steals (1.4 pg) last season. Venturelli significantly improved all of her numbers during her sophomore campaign and most notably led the team with 44 3-pointers while scoring at a 9.2 clip.
Wesley and Widener are scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m. Live stats and live streaming video will be provided by the Wesley Sports Information Department.
