ASTON, Pa. - The Wesley College Women's Basketball team earned a 62-56 victory over College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon in the Consolation Round of the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament.
Tiyanna Gibbs notched a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Monshea Newsome-Murray nearly had a triple-double netting seven points, grabbing nine rebounds, and dishing off 10 assists. Brionna Johnson chipped in with 17 points as the Wolverines secured their second victory of the season.
Johnson got the team out to an early lead in the first quarter, scoring eight points on 4-for-7 shooting in the initial frame. Tiyanna Gibbs, Alexus Stroud, and Kiara Johnson each drilled three pointer for the Wolverines as they built a 21-15 lead in the first quarter.
Mount Saint Vincent stormed back in the second quarter, holding the Wolverines to just seven points. The Dolphins went on a 9-1 run to take a 24-22 lead, but the Wolverines scored six unanswered points to finish the half and take a 28-24 advantage into the halftime break.
Wesley never trailed in the third quarter, leading by as many as 10 points after an Adriane Fraser triple with 2:48 left in the third quarter. Mount Saint Vincent came crawling back though, taking a 56-55 lead with 2:26 to go in the fourth quarter. After a missed three, Gibbs came away with a huge offensive rebound allowing the offense to reset. On their second chance, Monshea Newsome-Murray found Brittney Kerns for a layup and a foul. The senior drilled the and-one shot to give Wesley a two-point lead. From there the Wolverine defense stifled the Dolphins, and the Navy and White finished off their foul shots to secure the 62-56 win.
Wesley moves to 2-1 on the season and will return to action on Tuesday when they host Rosemont College in another non-conference event.
