Wolverines Fall Short in Return from Holiday Break

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. - The Wesley College Women's Basketball team came away with a loss in their return to the court after the holiday, falling 69-53 to Eastern University on Friday afternoon.

Smyrna native Brionna Johnson led the team with 15 points on the day, but was Wesley's only double-digit scorer. Monshea Newsome-Murray scored nine points, dished off a team-high four assists and snagged seven rebounds on the day.

The Wolverines shot the ball at just a 30.9% rate, converting 21 of their 68 attempts. The team had trouble getting to the rim as the Eagles swatted away 10 blocks, including seven by their forward Regie Robinson.

Eastern built up an early 19-8 lead in the first quarter, limiting the Wolverines to just 3-for-22 shooting in the frame. The cold start dug the Navy and White into a hole that they couldn't escape as the team never gathered a lead in the game.

The Wolverines did outscore the Eagles in the fourth quarter, netting 19 points including six from Johnson and four from Maura Binkley as the team worked to dominate in the paint.

The squad falls to 5-6 on the season and will return to action on Wednesday, January 4 when they host Christopher Newport University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest.
