DOVER, Del.- To start off the New Year, the lady Wolverines Basketball team took on the Christopher Newport Captains in a crucial CAC matchup. The Wolverines came out with fire under their belts in run and gun style, taking an early lead within the first minute of the game as sophomore Monshea Newsome-Murray assisted senior Brionna Johnson in the first bucket of the game. A few plays later, Newsome-Murray stole the ball from the captains and transitioned it up the court to junior Alexus Stroud who sunk a deep three pushing the lead to 11-4 in favor of the Wolverines. There was a back and forth battle with the teams swapping leads 3 times before senior Kiara Johnson stole the ball from CNU and dished it off to freshmen Paige Hailstock who took advantage of an open court and drained a triple to once again tie the game. The second quarter favored the captains as they headed into the half with a 31-23 lead.

Fast forward to the third quarter where the Wolverines applied pressure to the Captains when Newsome-Murray made a no look pass to Stroud who powered up a shot and was fouled on the play, she then converted on both free throw attempts chipping away at the CNU lead. Stroud led the team with 14 points as fellow Smryna High grad Brionna Johnson was a force on the glass contributing a game high 12 rebounds to lead both teams.

In the final minutes of the game, senior Brittney Kerns drained one from downtown but it wasn't enough to overcome the captains as the wolverines fell 50-71 dropping them to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in CAC play. The Wolverines return to action on Saturday as they host the Sea Hawks from St. Mary's in another CAC tilt at 1pm.
