DOVER. Del. – The Wesley College women's basketball team pulled out a 53-50 non-conference win over the Bryn Athyn Lions on Saturday.
Both teams were tied at eight after the first quarter, then Wesley got out on a 14-4 run to start the second quarter. Wesley's run was highlighted by Shelby Johnson's three consecutive layups on the fast break before a Bryn Athyn timeout with 7:37 left in the first half.
Bryn Athyn went out on a 12-2 run of their own, which was capped by an Allie Warren 3-pointer with 1:07 to go in the half to take a 24-23 lead. Back-to-back Johnson baskets would put Wesley up 27-24 heading into the halftime break.
Wesley would stretch their lead to eight in the second half before Bryn Athyn chipped away at the Wesley lead late in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 48 with three minutes left in the game when Monshea Newsome-Murray found Johnson underneath the basket to put Wesley up by two. A Sydney Pedersen driving layup would give Wesley the 52-48 lead with under two minutes to go in regulation.
Bryn Athyn's Lauren Beck would trim Wesley's lead to 52-50 with 39 seconds left in the game. Stacey O'Neale would split a pair of free throws, giving Bryn Athyn the chance to tie the game. Allie Warren's desperation 3-point attempt in the waning seconds of the game would come up short and Johnson would reel in the airball and dribble out the clock to give Wesley the win.
Johnson led all scorers with 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting and pulled down 12 rebounds. It was Johnson's second straight game with a double-double and third of the season. She also added three steals and an assist.
Newsome-Murray dished out a game-high 12 assists and five steals. Newsome-Murray added six rebounds and a pair of blocks. O'Neale tallied 13 points while Angelique Gathers recorded five points and four steals.
Lauren Beck had 20 rebounds and 10 points for Bryn Athyn.
Wesley (3-6) will be back in action after Christmas when they travel to Washington, D.C. take part in the two-day Jamie Roberts/Fairfield Inn Tournament, hosted by Catholic University of America. Wesley will take on the host Catholic Cardinals on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 3 p.m.
