GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Wesley College women's basketball team were unable to hold an early lead in Atlantic East Conference action against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins, falling 79-57 to the Griffins on the road on Wednesday.
Wesley came out the gates on fire. As a team, Wesley hit eight of their first 12 shots of the game, including draining three 3-pointers to take a 20-13 lead over Gwynedd Mercy at the end of the first quarter.
The shots went cold for Wesley in the second quarter to go into the halftime break trailing Gwynedd Mercy 34-29. Wesley was able to chip away at the five-point lead in the third quarter, ending the period on a 12-5 run to head into the fourth down 47-44.
Wesley was unable to capitalize of the momentum of the third quarter as a 24-6 run by Gwynedd in the middle part of the fourth quarter would propel the Griffins to a 79-57 win in conference play.
Shelby Johnson earned her sixth double-double of the season behind a team-high 17-point, 10-rebound effort. She shot 7-of-16 from the field and added an assist, a block and a steal.
Monshea Newsome-Murray also scored double figures in the loss, netting 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Newsome-Murray also tallied six steals, five rebounds, four assists and a block. Stacey O'Neale knocked down three 3-pointers en route to notching nine points in the game.
Susan Bossley had a game-high 22 points for Gwynedd Mercy.
Wesley returns home on Saturday to take on the Marymount Saints in their first action inside the friendly confines of Wentworth Gymnasium of 2019. Tipoff is scheduled for noon.
