FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College scored twice in the final 37 seconds to defeat Wesley College 14-13 in the season opener for both squads.
A goal by Lauren Perzal tied the game at 13-13 with 37 seconds to play and Brandy Noel scored 12 seconds later for the game-winner.
The dramatic finish erased a Wesley comeback that had erased an 11-8 deficit with 15:38 left in the game. The Wolverines went on a 5-1 run that featured goals from five different players as Wesley took a 13-12 lead on a Jade Martin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) goal with 3:56 remaining.
The Blazers had led for much of the game up to that point after going on a seven-goal spree in the first half, including three of Kelsey Blackwell's four goals on the afternoon that gave Hood an 7-5 lead.
Martin's goal late in the second half was her third of the game and gave her 99 in her career. Katelyn Randes (Odenton, Md/Arundel) scored four times in her collegiate debut, while Alyssa Prudente (Hereford, Md./Hereford ) added a pair in hers. Leslie Cervenka (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) scored once and added four assists.
Amanda Browning (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) had six ground balls and caused three turnovers. Farryn Kauffman (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) stopped 12 shots in goal.
Noel matched Blackwell with four goals to lead the Blazers. Sam Liptrap made 14 saves in the game. Julia Banks scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
Wesley will travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for the second game of its five-game road trip to open the season. The opening draw is at 3:30 PM on February 24.
