Dover, Del. - The Wesley (6-6, 0-4 CAC) women's lacrosse team were unable to keep their streak of 4 wins alive falling to host Marymount (Va.) 21-9.
The Wolverines fell behind early in the first half as Marymount (4-5, 1-3 CAC) built a 5-1 advantage with the help of four goals from Sara Horne. Horne finished the game with seven goals and two assist to lead all scorers with nine points in the game.
Wesley fought back hard, scoring the next four goals to knot the score at 5-5 mid-way through the first half. Jade Martin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) and Stephanie Bailey (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) added two goals each in the run.
The two teams traded goals, with Wesley's Leslie Cervenka (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) scoring her only goal of the game at the 13:12 mark of the first half.
Marymount then rattled off 11 straight goals to finish off the first half, stunning the Wolverines with a 17-6 first half advantage.
In the second half, Marymount was able to score one more goal before Wesley was able to find the back of the net. Wesley's Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) and Jade Martin added back to back goals making the score 18-8.
Marymount added two more goals before Bailey scored her third goal of the game with 9:17 remaining. Marymount found the net one more time to make the final score 21-9, earning them their first victory in CAC play. Wesley is 0-4 in conference play.
Team stats were relatively even with Wesley holding a slight edge in ground balls (32-28), and turnovers (16-24), but the Saints outshot the Wolverines 28-26 and held a solid advantage in draw controls (22-10).
Wesley host Stevenson University on Wednesday, April 1 with a 4:00 p.m. start.
