DOVER, Del. - Wesley College set the school's single season goal record in a 17-8 win over visiting Penn State Abington, finishing the year with 183 goals.
The Wolverines (7-9) jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first 10:47. Back-to-back goals by Jade Martin (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) during the run tied and passed the 2007 team's old record of 172 goals.
The Nittany Lions (1-8) broke through with 18:05 left in the half on the first of six goals by Jenna Pugh. The two teams basically traded scores for the remainder of the half with Wesley leading 14-5 at the half. The Wolverines held Penn State Abington to just five shots in the period, but they scored on all five, including four by Pugh, who also assisted on the other score.
Wesley received goals by Stephanie Bailey (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and Martin in the first 4:47 of the second half, before running the clock down for the remainder of the contest.
Pugh had a game high seven points.
Martin finished the game with five goals. Leslie Cervenka (Newtown, Pa./Pennsbury) tallied six points on three goals and three assists. Alyssa Prudente (Hereford, Md./Hereford) scored three times and picked up a pair of assists. Bailey gave the Wolverines three players with three goals.
Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) had six ground balls and caused two turnovers. Brittany Novak (Abingdon, Md./Edgewood) forced three turnovers and had four ground balls.
Farryn Kauffman (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) made seven saves, all in the second half.
Sam Leybman and Juliette Candelaria combined for 11 saves for Penn State Abington.
Wesley converted 4-of-8 free position shots in the contest. The Wolverines also limited the Nittany Lions to just 5-of-16 on clears.
The win concludes Wesley's 2009 season.
