Women’s Lacrosse Routs USMMA in Opener

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Rylee Gould and Jorden Lutz both had career days offensively to lead the Wesley College women's lacrosse team to a 19-5 season opening victory at Merchant Marine on Sunday afternoon.  Head Coach Aimee LeClair also got her first victory at the helm of the Wolverines program.

A junior from Cape May, N.J., Gould tallied four goals and dished out six assists for ten total points while Lutz, a Collingwood, N.J., product, made her first start on the offensive end and scored six goals for Wesley.

Kirsten Ward also notched a hat trick for Wesley while Kaitlin Brennan and Alexandra Barbieri recorded two goals apiece. 

On the defensive end, Lutz also controlled a team-high seven draws and caused three turnovers as Wesley was credited with 19 forced turnovers on the day.  Leading the squad in the category was Jessica Giaccone with five. Giaccone also recorded a team-high six ground balls.

Making her first career start, Katherine Cooke stopped five shots and allowed just five goals in 60 minutes of action.

Wesley never trailed after Lutz and Ward scored the first two goals of the game off assists from Gould.  The Mariners cut the deficit in half but Lutz answered with a score on the free position and Alyse Obermeyer added another to put the Wolverines on top, 4-1 with 16:03 left in the first half. 

Each team scored three goals apiece to close out the period as Wesley took a 7-4 lead into the break, but the Wolverines outscored USMMA, 12-1 in the second to seal the victory.

The Wolverines host Notre Dame (Md.) on Tuesday, March 4 at 4 pm.
