DOVER, Del. – Wesley College's women's lacrosse team wrapped up the season with a 10-4 Capital Athletic Conference win over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Scott D. Miller Stadium. The Wolverines finish the year at -10 overall with a 1-7 mark in the CAC while the Knights fall to 0-15 and 0-8 in league play.
Kaitlin Brennan and Jessica Giaccone both scored twice to lead Wesley while Francesca Benitez also recorded two points on a goal and an assist. Brennan also had a team-high three draw controls while Benitez' four ground balls led the team.
The Wolverines defense really came to play, causing 19 turnovers on the day, with Giaccone, Benitez and Khadijah Sanders forcing three miscues apiece. Three other Wolverines also caused a pair of turnovers.
Wesley scored the first five goals of the game with Rylee Gould notching the first just three minutes and 12 seconds into the game. Southern Virginia was able to get on the board with 3:45 remaining in the period and the Wolverines went into halftime with a 5-1 lead.
Brennan, Maddison Cypher and Giaccone all scored a goal to open the second half, extending the Wolverines' lead to 8-1 with 20:24 left. The Knights did not go away, however, scoring the next two, but Victoria Hayes and Brennan responded with goals to seal the win.
Savannah Clough was credited with 14 saves on the day.
Prior to the game, Wesley honored its three seniors: Stephanie Blakely, Jessica Giaccone and Rylee Gould.
