Wolverines Edged on the Road

FREDERICK, Md. - The Wesley College Women's Lacrosse team held a slim lead at the halftime break, but were outscored in the second half as they fell 12-11 to Hood College on Friday evening. 

Francesca Benitez scored four goals and dished off an assist in her return to the field. The midfielder had missed the Wolverines' prior two games due to injury. Fallon Fore scored twice and dished off a pair of assists while Maddison Cypher netted three goals and Ashley Luna added two more. Nyi Wright led the team with three ground balls and Foley Wassmuth, Bailey Olds, and Naomi Reynolds each registered a caused turnover. Savannah Clough made seven saves to take the loss in net. 

The Wolverines fell behind 4-1 in the first eight minutes of play but responded with two straight goals to trim the lead to just one. After a pair of Hood goals put the Blazers ahead 6-3, Wesley finished the half on a 5-1 run in the final eight minutes to earn an 8-7 advantage going into the halftime break. Cypher netted two of her three goals in the final minute of the first half as the Wolverines pushed the tempo to take the lead.

In the second half, Hood tied the game quickly and then took a 10-9 lead on a man-up goal with 14:58 remaining. Just over a minute later, Wesley tied the game at 10-10 with Benitez finding Ashley Luna for a crucial goal. Hood responded with a pair of goals to take a 12-10 lead over the Wolverines. With 3:42 remaining, Benitez netted a free position shot to cut the lead to just one goal. The final minutes expired on the Wolverines as they attempted to tie the game to no avail.

Wesley moves to 1-3 on the season and will return to action on Saturday when they face Mt. St. Vincent at home.
