DOVER, Del. – The Wesley College women's lacrosse team looks to better a six-win 2017 season, which featured the longest winning streak and best start to a season in program history.
"We have a solid group of returners that are focused on improving every day," said second-year head coach Jillian Lontz. "With this group, we can build on the success of last season and continue to strive for our goals for this year and the future."
The Wolverines feature a core of juniors that paced the offense a season ago. Junior Fallon Fore returns after leading the team with 45 points, 44 draw controls and 39 goals. Fore's 44 draw controls and 39 goals ranked ninth in the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) in 2017.
Fellow juniors Brianna Bacon and Paige Brehm join Fore to lead the Wesley offense. Bacon was a playmaker last year collecting a team-high 10 assists along with 32 points and 22 goals. Brehm led the Wolverines with 35 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. Brehm also recorded 31 points with 25 goals and six assists.
Senior attacker Maddison Cypher will also factor into the offense. Cypher registered 22 points on 13 goals and nine assists last season. Sophomore Kathleen Martin looks to best a freshman campaign that featured seven goals and six assists.
The Wesley defense will be led by senior goalkeeper Shelby Schirmer, who ranked third in the CAC in saves with 137. Seniors Francesca Benitez, Alexis Galloway and Rodneisha Scott along with juniors Taylor Speicher and Stacey O'Neale and sophomore Natalie Quigley will compete for spots on the defensive side of the ball.
In the preseason CAC poll, the Wolverines collected 14 points in the poll and were slated to finish eighth in the conference. Fifteen-time defending conference champion Salisbury edged York for the top spot in the preseason poll. Salisbury tallied 61 points and five first-place votes while York picked up 60 points and four first-place votes.
The Wolverines open the season on Saturday, Feb. 24 when they host the Cedar Crest Falcons. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start from Drass Field at Scott D. Miller Stadium.
