Wolverines Drop CAC Opener

DOVER, Del. - Wesley College controlled play for most of the evening, but and opportunistic Marymount (Va.) team made the most of its chances for a 2-1 Saint win over the Wolverines.

Marymount (2-3, 1-1 CAC) found the back of the net first, on a score by Shannon Bisselink in the eighth minute on the Saints' first shot of the night.  The visitors mounted most of their offense over the next 16 minutes, but Wesley's (1-3-1, 0-1 CAC) Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) was up to the task, stopping four shots to keep the Wolverines in the match.

In the 30th minute, Wesley was awarded a corner kick.  Kaitlin Barry (Chester, N.J./Immaculata) sent the ball into the box from the left corner where it caromed back to her off a Marymount defender.  Barry fired a rocket to the near side of the goal.  The Saints' keeper got a hand on it, but only enough to deflect it into the back of the goal as Barry tied things at 1-1.

The Wolverines kept the pressure on in the second half, firing off 12 shots, but could not find the back of the net.  Bisselink fed Paige Pierson for what proved to be the game winner for Marymount in the 70th minute.

Wesley had chances down the stretch, but Sammi Nevin's (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) was turned away and two solid chances for Kim Fearnbach (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) sailed wide.

Kahan finished with four saves for the Wolverines, who outshot Marymount 21-9 and held a 15-0 advantage in corner kicks.  Wesley also allowed just one shot on goal in the final 66 minutes.

Gabriela Prellezo made seven saves for the Saints.

Wesley is back in action on September 18 at Mary Washington in CAC action.
