2005 Season Preview
DOVER, De. - The 2005 edition of the Wesley College
women's soccer team is looking to build off the success of the 2004
campaign. Wesley broke the school record for wins (12) and
advanced to their first ever Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC)
championship game, only to fall to College Misericordia, 3-2 in
penalty kicks. Head Coach Ed Muntz enters his 11th
season as the head coach and he feels confident that this year's
team will continue to build on the success of the past two
years. Wesley is 22-11-7 since 2003 and the outlook is to
make their second consecutive trip to the PAC Championship
game. "Our focus right now is to get ready for our first
regular season game and continue to prepare ourselves for
conference play," stated Coach Muntz.
The Wolverines are not at a loss for experience as they return top goal scorer (18) and points leader (41) Kyle Savidge (SO, Clarksboro, NJ/Kingsway). Savidge, the PAC Rookie of the year and 2nd team all-conference selection, will be teamed with Felina Sachetti (JR, Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township) to guide Wesley's attack. Sachetti earned 2nd team honors in 2003 and posted 7 goals and 2 assists in 2004, while playing in all 21 games. Co-captain Lisa Lemons (JR, Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) led the team in assists with 11 and also added 4 goals. Lemons will help solidify the midfield having started in all 21 games. Wesley will be helped by the return of Shannon Rybak (SO, North Haven, CT/North Haven) who played in the first 12 games before injuring her knee, posting 3 goals and 5 assists.
On defense, Wesley will be leaning toward the leadership of co-captain Colleen McMahon (SR, Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) and 1st team all-conference goalie Brittany Block (SO, Oceanside, NY/Oceanside). McMahon a mainstay on Wesley's defense, helped hold opponents to a .93 goals against average. Block held opponents to a .85 goals against average in 18 games played, recording 111 saves on the season. Carolyn Adair (JR, Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), a starter in 20 games in 2004, added 2 goals and 5 assists and will bring added depth to defensive-midfield.
Key newcomers include Becky Kreps (FR, Newark, DE/Newark), Jen Saitis (FR, Hockessin, DE/St. Mark's), Gina Orbben (FR, Hockessin, DE/A.I. DuPont), Jessica Trenkamp (FR, Vincentown, NJ/Senaca) and Megan Hallman (FR, Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI). Coach Muntz knows that the leadership and experience that his returnees gained from last year's conference championship game will only benefit this team. "This team is learning everyday what it takes to be a successful student-athlete. They understand that with quality leadership, discipline and their commitment to their teammates, anything is possible. We are looking forward to the season and the opportunity to get back to the PAC championship game."
