FREDERICK, Md. - With a trip to the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championships potentially on the line for both teams, Wesley emerged with a 3-1 win over Hood in the conference regular season finale for both squads. Had the Blazers won, the two teams and Marymount would have been at the mercy of a coin flip to determine which two would advance to the conference tournament.
Game scores were 30-28, 30-14, 25-30, 30-23.
Wesley (10-11, 2-6 CAC) trailed in game one, 20-15 before Jackie Gillespie's turn serving resulted in six points for the Wolverines who captured the 30-28 win on one of Nettie Choice's seven blocks on the evening. The momentum carried over to the second game, where Wesley jumped out to a 15-4 lead and cruised to the 30-14 win.
In game three, Wesley fell behind 23-17 before cutting Hood (4-23, 0-8 CAC) lead to just three, 28-25. The Blazers regrouped for the final two points and forced a fourth game.
With the Wolverines down 19-17 in the fourth game, Lori Vorhees came up with some critical serves as part of an 8-1 run that gave Wesley a 25-20 lead and the Wolverines captured the game and the match with the 30-23 final.
Choice turned in a strong match with a team-high 14 kills to go along with her seven blocks. Lilia Brekke added a dozen kills for the Wolverines. Ashley Hearn dished out a season-high 34 assists. Gillespie had three aces, while Hearn added a pair.
Wesley returns home for the regular season finale and looks to climb back to .500 when Penn State Abington visits Wentworth Gymnasium on Saturday, October 27 at 1:00 PM.
